October 20, 2006
It's been nearly a year since Roberto "Bobby" Ruiz Jr. and
Adam Rodriguez were shot and killed while at a backyard birthday party
in West Covina.
The Nov. 20 shooting remains unsolved.
But their families and a nonprofit group hope a billboard will lead
to new information.
Ruiz will be among four slaying victims
featured on a billboard to be unveiled Oct. 30 at Arrow Highway and
Barranca Avenue in Covina. The billboard will include a tip line to
call and the words "Stop the Killing."
The billboard is part of a campaign launched
in May by Justice for Murdered Children, a nonprofit group founded
by parents of homicide victims.
"Our whole objective is to let people
know that anyone can be a victim of a homicide and to bring awareness
to the unsolved homicide," said LaWanda Hawkins, one of the group's
founders.
She said their wish is to put up at least
one billboard every month. They were fortunate to get three billboards
this month, Hawkins said. They unveiled the billboard in Los Angeles
on Thursday and the one in Inglewood has an Oct. 26 unveiling.
The billboards will be up for a month.
Justice for Murdered Children have put up six billboards featuring
24 victims.
Ruiz's mother, Luz, belongs to the group.
"I would like to create awareness with the public what is going
on the streets and that our kids are getting murdered," Luz Ruiz
said. "I would like to ask our community - West Covina and other
cities - to join us in the fight to end the senseless killing of our
kids." She also hopes that anyone who heard or saw anything about
her son's case will come forward after seeing the billboard and call
police.
Candlelight vigils for Ruiz and Rodriguez
are held every 20th of the month at the West Covina Civic Center.
Ruiz's sister, Claudia, said they planned on holding the vigil 8 p.m.,
Friday by the new billboard.
"I would like to invite everybody
to join us in a prayer, to pray for our kids because I don't wish
another family to go through what we're going through," said
Luz Ruiz, who is raising Roberto's 3-year-old son.
